What is an GRP Water tank?

GRP (Glass Fibre Reinforced Polyester) panel tanks, particularly those produced from Sheet Moulding Compound (SMC), are produced using an advanced hot-press compression moulding technique. This includes mixing major raw materials: reinforcement glass fibers, polyester resins as the binder matrix, a catalyst for curing initiation, and fillers. The combination results in the SMC, which is subsequently fed into strong hydraulic presses.

These presses exert high compressive pressure at a high temperature of about 150°C. Under this high-temperature molding, the styrene monomer part of the raw SMC material evaporates. This essential evaporation step makes the final GRP panels highly inert and stable so that they are completely safe and compatible with the storage of drinking (potable) water.

Benefits of GRP Pannel Tank

GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) water tanks provide a broad range of advantages making them a better option for all types of water storage needs in Lucknow and more. The main benefits include:

Superior Corrosion and Rust Resistance: GRP does not corrode or rust like metal tanks, so the stored water will be pure and free from contamination, and the tank structure does not degrade with time. This is perfect for different water qualities and conditions.

High Lifespan and Durability: GRP tanks are extremely durable and resistant to severe weather conditions, UV, and physical damage. Such high strength contributes to a very long lifespan, usually extending to decades, without much wear and tear.

Light in Weight and Simple Installation: In spite of their durability, GRP panels are much lighter in weight than steel or concrete-made panels. This makes it extremely easy to transport, lowers shipping expenses, and facilitates faster and simpler on-site construction, even in difficult or limited areas, without heavy machinery.

Superior Water Hygiene: The smooth, non-porous interior of GRP tanks prevents the development of bacteria, algae, and fungi necessary to ensure potable water quality. The material itself is food-grade and will not leach toxic chemicals into the water.

Design Flexibility and Customization: GRP tanks consist of modular panels, which enable extremely customizable shapes (such as L-shaped or U-shaped configurations) and capacities to match the exact requirements of any site. They are also easily expanded or moved if circumstances change in the future.

Low Maintenance: Because they are resistant to corrosion, rust, and biological growth by nature, GRP tanks do not need much maintenance in comparison to those made from conventional materials, saving money over the long term.

Thermal Insulation Properties: GRP also has good insulating qualities, which keeps the water temperature within the tank relatively stable. This is especially useful in warm climates such as Lucknow to avoid overheating of the water.

Cost-Effectiveness (Long-Term): Although the upfront cost may at times be equivalent to or slightly above very minimalist alternatives, the longer lifespan, low maintenance, and simplicity of installation of GRP tanks yield significant cost savings over the long term.

Frequently Asked Questions About GRP Water Tank

What is the difference between FRP and GRP water tanks?

FRP (Fiber Reinforced Polymer/Plastic) is a more general term for composite materials. It is any polymer matrix (such as polyester, epoxy, or vinyl ester resin) reinforced with some form of fiber, which may be glass, carbon, aramid (such as Kevlar), basalt, or even natural fibers. The type of fiber used is determined by the particular performance needed.

GRP (Glass Reinforced Polyester/Plastic) is a particular kind of FRP where fibers used for reinforcement are specifically glass fibers. Hence, all GRP tanks are a subcategory of FRP tanks, but not every FRP tank is GRP tank (as they may employ fibers other than carbon as well). For water tanks, GRP is the most popular and prevalent category of FRP.

Which is better GRP tank or PE tank?

The “better” tank, GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) or PE (Polyethylene), is a matter of the particular application and priorities. GRP tanks provide enhanced strength, durability, and chemical and extreme temperature resistance, which is best suited for aggressive applications and bulk storage. PE tanks are typically lower in cost, lighter in weight, and easier to install, which makes them best for home and small commercial uses.

What is GRP lining for a water tank?

GRP lining (Glass Reinforced Plastic lining) is a protective coating applied to water tanks to prevent leakage, corrosion, and contamination. It creates a durable, waterproof barrier inside the tank, extending its lifespan and ensuring safe water storage.
